BEAUREGARD: Developmentally disabled still need help

On November 4, tens of thousands of people with developmental disabilities and their parents, caregivers and advocates stood figuratively on Colorado’s streets with signs that read, “Will Save Lives for 2 Cents.” We put ourselves out there, needing help to provide life-saving services to people with developmental disabilities.

MENIFEE —- Trisha and Joseph were zooming through The Promenade mall in Temecula when Joseph caught a glimpse of his reflection on the shining mall floor. Joseph stopped, blocking her way, and dropped to the ground to peer at the shifting image. Trisha swiveled to the right to clear Joseph’s body and continued toward a coffee shop. Joseph left the spot and strode alongside her.

SMCM Prof. Awarded for Developmentally Disabled Children Research

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. (Nov. 16, 2008) — A St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) psychology professor known for her groundbreaking research on raising children with developmental disabilities is the recipient of the Arc of the United States’ 2008 Distinguished Research Award. Dr. Laraine M. Glidden was presented the award during the Arc’s National Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Nov. 7. Her research demonstrates that both adoptive and birth families are, by and large, extremely resilient and find great rewards in meeting the challenges of raising children with special needs. This proved to be true for families who had children with Down syndrome and also for those with children with other kinds of developmental disabilities.
